Skin Care for The Ages

I am a big believer in skin care and I always say to my clients: " Your makeup will only look as good as the canvas it is applied upon."  ( If you have worked with me personally, I can practically guarantee that you witnessed those words come out of my mouth).   I am constantly preaching about sunscreen and how to properly take care of your skin.  Henceforth, I will be starting a series on the subject for various age groups.  Our skin changes as we age and we need to adjust our routine accordingly.  I do not believe in fancy schmancy products that were made by monks in the middle of the rainforest where the herbs are only harvested at a certain time of year, and I also do not believe in a lot of different steps. Who has the time anyway?   I know I don't with 2 active boys running around.  You need basics, a proper routine and age appropriate treatment products.  Everyone should cleanse, hydrate, protect and treat.  That is all you need to see results.  I would just like to state for the record, that I am NOT a dermatologist and if you have severe or specific issues and concerns, you should visit a reputable one to help you. That being said, let's get glowing (haha, get it?)

I will be breaking it down for you, starting with women in their 20's.

Skin care in your 20's

If you are a woman in her 20's, now is the perfect time to start a skin care routine based on your skin type.   At this point, anti aging products are unneccessary and a waste of money.  You should also avoid heavy creams as they tend to me too rich and can clog your pores, causing blackheads and millia - those pesky little little whiteheads.  However,  it is the perfect time to prevent lines and wrinkles and age spots, so you don't have to treat them later.  You should cleanse and moisturize daily and incorporate 2 key items into your daily regimen:  Sunscreen and a light eye cream.  Those are really all you need.  If you want, you can exfoliate your skin about once a week to unclog your pores and give your skin a fresh start.

Skin care in your 30‘s

In your 30's is when serious skin care really becomes important.  We are starting to see our first signs of aging, such as fine lines and age spots, and skin starts to loose collagen.  Fun, right?  Now is the time to step it up a notch and bring in the anti-aging power houses.  You should have your basics down, including my beloved sunscreen every single day, but here is what's up in addition to that:

1) Exfoliate at night, so your treatment products can really go to work.  Exfoliating should always be gentle, never harsh.

2)During the day, combine an antioxidant serum with your face cream.  They enhance each other.

3) Drink plenty of water and add lemon to it for an extra boost.

4) Add a treatment product, such as a retinol product to treat signs of aging.

Skin care in your 40’s

In your 40's, your cell turnover slows down drastically, leading to dull and dry skin.  This is also where your fine lines will turn into actual wrinkles (yikes!).  Further, because of hormonal changes, you could be dealing with some adult acne. Here's how to treat the skin your in:

Adding an oral supplement of Evening Primrose Oil is a great way to make your skin glow from within.  Glycolic and salicylic acids are your friends by helping with exfoliation, removing dead skin cells and treating the occasional blemish. Prescription retinoids, such as Renova,  are your best bets to treat wrinkles. If you are sensitive, you can also try an over the counter product that contains retinol.  A glycolic peel, whether at home or at the doctor's office, is a fantastic way to get your glow on by exfoliating, treating wrinkles, age spots and acne, all at the same time.
