Dear Edwina: When was the last time you took your child on a “date” to see a show?

When was the last time you took your child out on a "date" to see a show? Not a movie, but an off- Broadway show?

I can’t wait. I’m bringing my daughter to see the musical DEAR EDWINA this weekend. Girl time! And the best part is that I don’t have to drive far. (Or as the locals pronounce it here in Rhode Island, faaaah.) I’ll bet you’ll want to go too.

After we put on some skirts and boots, we're heading to beautiful Jamestown to see the musical production, DEAR EDWINA, performed at the Jamestown Community Theatre (JCT) on Nov. 17. Dear Edwina is a musical production by Zina Goldrich and Marcy Heisler, the same team that created Junie B. Jones, The Musical, and other popular productions.

The lively production chronicles the adventures of Edwina Spoonapple, advice-giver extraordinaire, who wows her neighbors in Paw Paw, Michigan. A spunky, singing version of Dear Abby, told through a show-within-a-show format, Edwina and her friends share wisdom on everything from trying new foods to making new friends through clever, catchy and poignant songs.  The show unfolds like a virtual block party and will delight children, teens, and adults.

Dear Edwina was nominated for two Drama Desk Awards and the NYC Off-Broadway run received rave reviews from critics and attracted a star-studded audience including Brooke Shields, SNL’s Molly Shannon, and Mary Louise Parker.

If you can’t take my word for it, see what Jamestown Community Theatre’s Artistic Director, Mary S. Wright, has to say about it: “JCT’s production of DEAR EDWINA will have everyone singing along with the contagious music sung by the talented cast…. I certainly agree with the critics who praised the writers as “the most gifted new writing team of their musical theatre generation.” JCT is very lucky to bring their fresh, bright, witty and accessible musical to The Ocean State.”

And I thought we’d have to wait until the holidays to have our special mother/daughter “dinner and a show”. This is such a wonderful pre-holiday treat.

For the first time, JCT has rolled back its ticket prices to 1990 rates as a way to give back to the community. Tickets purchased in advance are $5 for seniors (65 and older) and children/students (18 and under). Regular adult tickets will be $10. Both ticket prices will increase to $7 and $12 if purchased at the door. For more information, please call 401- 423-2121. Hope to see you there!
