As a mom, there are days when I feel like I actually have it together. While others, I can’t remember why I went to the grocery store in the first place. I think it’s important to embrace the fact that these moments, which I like to refer to as Mommy Brain, happen. It’s an inevitable fact of parenthood. When my kids were really little and I had mommy insomnia, doing something as simple as walking to the mailbox was considered an accomplishment. And remembering to GET the mail as soon as I reached the mailbox was another.
As a mom of two kids, now 13 and 10, (aaak) I can’t stress enough how important it is to laugh at yourself when you’re experiencing a Mommy Brain moment.
Always keep in mind that other moms, although they may seem like they have it all together on the outside, may be going through the same everyday “Mommy Brain Pharts” that you experience.
I hope the following list helps make you feel a little better. Some of these were inspired by my friend Jane Couto Govednik of http://www.MomGenerations.com, who recently became a mother. (Thanks, and congratulations, Jane!)
You know you’re suffering from Mommy Brain when:
§ You remember the diaper bag, but forget to pack the diapers.
§ You remember to pack a lunch for one child, but not the other.
§ You start chit-chatting with an acquaintance at the grocery store and keep calling her “Kim” and realize when you get back in your car….the woman’s name is actually NOT Kim.
§ As soon as you start to get really good at remembering to pack both of their lunches, they decide they only want hot lunch for the rest of the school year.
§ You walk downstairs and forget what you came down for, so you walk back up and start doing something else.
§ In the middle of doing the other task, you finally remember why you went downstairs in the first place, but then forget what you were doing after that because the phone rings.
§ You feed your dog breakfast, twice, by mistake.
§ You fill the dishwasher and forget to press the START button.
§ You walk out of a store and forget where you parked your car.
§ You frantically call your cell phone and discover it buried at the bottom of your handbag.
§ You leave your Starbucks drink somewhere in the house, but you can’t remember WHERE.
§ You search high and low for your sunglasses, and then catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and realize you’ve been using them as a headband all day.
